Betting Account History: What to Save Before Closing an Account
Closing a betting account can remove the easiest route to information you may later need. Before asking an operator to close an account, save the account history, bet receipts and messages that explain what happened to your money and wagers.
This guide is for customers of Great Britain-licensed remote betting businesses. It explains the records the Gambling Commission requires those businesses to make available, but it does not promise that every operator uses the same download tool or closure process.
Account statements and transaction history
Check the cash balance before making a closure request. A pending withdrawal, unsettled wager or restricted balance can make a later statement harder to interpret.
Under RTS 1 – Customer account information, customers must have easy access to at least three months of account and gambling history without contacting the licensee. At least 12 months must be available on request, and the request route should be clear.
The required history covers more than deposits. Depending on the account, it should include:
- deposits, withdrawals and other credits or debits;
- money moved between products;
- bets placed, results and winnings paid;
- bonus information where relevant;
- a selectable period and a summary total for that period; and
- net deposits at account level, with the period explained.
Download or save the statement while you can still reach the account. If the site only displays part of the required period, use the stated request process and keep a copy of the request.
Save open bets and bet receipts separately
An account statement may show the money movement without preserving every market detail. Save a separate receipt for each unsettled or disputed wager. Record the bet identifier, event, market, selection, odds, stake, placement time and current status.
Also save the rules that determine settlement. Our guide to reading betting settlement rules explains why market wording, official results, postponements and operator-specific rules can affect the outcome.
If a wager was settled through an early offer, keep the offer and confirmation as well as the final ledger entry. The betting cash-out rules guide explains the difference between seeing an offer, requesting it and receiving confirmation that the early settlement was processed.
Record deposits, withdrawals and payment methods
Export the payment history and match it against bank, card or wallet records. Note the date, amount, status and reference for each transaction. Do not store full card numbers, passwords or one-time security codes in your evidence file.
A withdrawal marked pending is not the same as money received. Keep the withdrawal request, any verification request and the final payment confirmation. If the account is restricted, ask the operator to explain in writing what will happen to the balance and any pending withdrawal.
The Gambling Commission says operators should not delay a payout without a valid regulatory or contractual reason. It also recognises that fraud, anti-money-laundering or other regulatory checks can sometimes require an investigation. That is why the precise account record and written explanation matter more than a general promise about payout speed.
Keep the terms and promotional record
Save the terms that applied when you deposited, placed the wager or accepted a promotion. Include the version date if one is shown. A later version may not explain the rule that was in force when the transaction occurred.
For a promotion or free bet, preserve:
- the offer page or message;
- eligibility and expiry wording;
- minimum odds or market restrictions;
- turnover or wagering conditions;
- the qualifying deposit and bet; and
- the ledger entry showing any award, expiry or removal.
Do not rely on a banner alone. The full terms and the account transaction are the useful record if the promotion is disputed.
Preserve complaints and support messages
Before closure, export chat transcripts and save emails, complaint references and final responses. A complaint file should show what you asked, what the operator answered and which account or bet references were discussed.
Great Britain licensees must have a complaint procedure and an arrangement with an alternative dispute resolution provider. If the matter is unresolved, closing the account does not make the evidence less important. Keep the operator’s final response and the name of the stated ADR provider.
Ordinary closure is not self-exclusion
An ordinary account closure and self-exclusion serve different purposes. Asking to close an account does not necessarily create the protections of a self-exclusion agreement.
For remote self-exclusion, the Commission’s LCCP social responsibility code 3.5.3 requires licensees to close the customer’s accounts, take steps to prevent further gambling, stop relevant direct marketing and return funds held in the account, subject to applicable regulatory requirements.
If the purpose is to stop gambling rather than merely tidy up an unused account, use the operator’s self-exclusion route or the relevant multi-operator scheme. Do not assume that deleting an app, unsubscribing from email or asking support to “shut the account” has the same effect.
Account history and a data access request are different
The gambling account history required by RTS 1 is designed to show balances and transactions. A privacy request may cover a wider set of personal data, but it is a different process and can involve identity checks and lawful exemptions.
Start with the account’s built-in history and statement tools. If specific personal data is still missing, read the operator’s privacy notice and use its published privacy request route. Describe the information and date range you need rather than asking for an undefined “full file”.
Practical pre-closure checklist
- Confirm the current cash balance and any restricted or bonus balance.
- Download at least the visible account and gambling history.
- Request a longer period if the built-in view is incomplete.
- Save open, voided and disputed bet receipts.
- Record pending withdrawals and verification requests.
- Save relevant terms, promotion rules and version dates.
- Export complaint and support correspondence.
- Write down the legal operator, licence details and complaint route.
- Decide whether you need ordinary closure or self-exclusion.
- Keep the closure confirmation and the final balance outcome.
After the account is closed
Check the final bank or wallet receipt against the saved account record. If an open bet was allowed to continue, retain the expected settlement date and ask how the result will be communicated. If the operator cancels or settles it, ask for the rule and transaction entry used.
Do not publish unredacted statements or identity documents in a public review. Share evidence only through the operator’s secure route, its ADR provider or another appropriate formal channel.
